7 Facebook Marketing Mistakes You Should Avoid

Facebook Marketing Mistakes

When you are in FB, you see, so many Facebook Marketing Mistakes people do. So many have no clue how to behave on Facebook and any other social media site.

Marketing on social media sites like Facebook always balances being social and promoting your business. You must be aware that people are not on Facebook to buy things. They are on Facebook because they want to know what their friends are doing and sometimes learn something from people with certain skills.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #1

People are posting on Facebook without a plan or concept. People who liked your business page or follow you on your profile are not always at the same time online like you. Therefore, you must ensure you plan your messages throughout the day.

When you have a business page, you can easily schedule your posts. When you prepare a post, you can click on the clock symbol, and then the calendar opens, where you can set the date and time to publish.

Also when you go on your FB page to insights, then posts, you see when your fans are mostly online. So it’s a good thing to schedule a part of your post at a time the most people are online.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #2

Selling to your audience all the time. People don’t like to be sold on Facebook. According to Quicksprout.com, the only time it works is when you offer a discount.

Another way you can do it is to create a landing page where you give people something for free, and then, in your follow-up emails, you can make some offers.

Besides that, you can also drive traffic to your blog post and sell your product or service with a good call to action at the end of your blog. In this way, you have first given some value; when people like it, they buy.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #3

Buying followers on Facebook. It can be okay to get a bit of a start. But the negative side of these followers is that they don’t interact on your page. These followers lower your edge rank, and FB doesn’t show your posts to people.

Only with an interactive audience will you have success with your FB page. Otherwise, you will have a ghost page.

You can promote your page on Facebook within your target audience. In this way, you get in front of the people who are interested in what you sell and are more interacting with you when you share things on your timeline. Read here also my Facebook marketing advice.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #4

When you share your blog post without doing some optimization on your blog, you need a picture with the right size on your blog, and you have to optimize the social meta tags. Without it, your message on Facebook does not look so nice. And you will lose interaction and clicks to your blog. You can optimize it with the SEO plugin from Yoast (it’s free).

What you have to know is the right pixel size of your picture. To get a big, nice picture on your FB timeline, the size of your picture should be 600 x 315 pixels. Then, your post will look like the one below.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #5

You may see this often that people always promote themselves. You see all the time messages on FB like „join my team\” „This will be big, join now\” and any other kind of self-promoting.

You get better results when you share things of value and posts from others. Things like quotes, blog posts, videos, and nice pictures. Write a comment all the time when you share something with other people. What also worked for me was sharing pictures when hiking or traveling. It\’s always a good thing when you share personal things on your FB page. People love to see things from your personal life on the business page. Because they see you are a real person.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #6

Spamming your links all over Facebook without giving value to people. Many people like your page or send a friend request on your profile with the intention of sharing their affiliate link. And this is a really bad behavior. Never share a link to your opportunity on someone else profile. You lose instant credibility, and it\’s likely that people will unfriend you or ban you.

Another thing is tagging people when you share something on FB. When you want to tag someone in a post with your links in it, ask first for permission. When someone is tagging me without permission, I unfriend him or ensure he can’t tag me anymore. You have to win the trust of people who follow you and with bad marketing (link spamming) they lose trust in you. You can apply the same to all other social media sites.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #7

Adding too many social media buttons on your site. In the past, I also had many sharing options and reduced them, and I will reduce them even more in the future. The more options people have, the less action they take. You can increase the click-through rate when you reduce the options. I recently saw a blog post where you could share pictures on FB, Twitter, and Pinterest when your mouse hovered over a picture. Such tools are cool things, and people like to share pictures. And when you do that, you always have a link to your site.

When you avoid these mistakes, you will see that you will have more engagement on your Facebook page. And at the same time, your sales will more likely go up.

You must remember that Facebook has changed its algorithm and keeps up with all the changes. The better you adapt to it, the more profit you will have from your activities.

What are your experiences with Facebook?

  1. All very important tips, Bruno. Thank you for sharing. Your comment regarding purchasing Facebook likes resonated with me. Working on political campaigns, it’s common practice to do this to show support. However, interestingly, many of the local campaigns that do this have lost their elections! Same situation here – their support base or people interested in their cause was not organic. It was all for show. Best to have genuine interest!

    1. Thank you Rebecca for your comment. It’s all about getting in front of the people who are really interested with what you are sharing. Otherwise it’s worthless effort.

  2. Thanks for sharing..! That is the most interesting tips about Facebook. I remembers, the first I start my social media marketing. I was blocked many times by Facebook. Actually, social media such as Facebook is for the community and relationship built. One day, everyone will got know that it not for only the business, but only relationship. However, the relationship will give us back the most benefit of internet marketing..!

    1. Thank you Kimsea for your comment and welcome on my blog. Yes to be in Facebook prison is not so nice and when you are, you realize that the way you do things are not working. Building relationship is the hardest part but worth the effort.

  4. Hi Bruno,
Indeed, there are lots of Facebook marketing mistakes we should avoid. The major mistakes center around doing things that tend to promote our business instead of offering value to the followers.

Unless, these mistakes are avoided, it would be difficult to gain traction with Facebook marketing!

Meanwhile, another mistake to be avoided with Facebook marketing is not responding to comments nor engaging followers. This should be avoided because it shows the blogger is not concerned about his/her audience.

I have left this comment in kingged.com where this post was shared.

    1. Thank you Sunday for coming to my blog. You are right when you say that not responding to comments and not engaging is a big mistake. Social media is all about interaction and building trust.

  5. Great post Bruno Bürgi, I agree these are definitely some common marketing mistakes people make on Facebook as well as other social media sites like Twitter and Google+. The more people understand the importance of offering value and building relationships, the better their results will be! Great share!

  7. Hey Bruno,

The mistakes that you mentioned here are the same mistakes I made when I first started using facebook. Yes, I spammed for a bit, added anyone and everyone to my fan page, and shared post without a pic. This really didn’t get me anywhere.

So last year I took note of all that I did, and put myself on other people’s shoes. This was after reading “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook” by Gary Vaynerchuk… I started working harder by working smarter, and used less of old marketing methods of exposing the mass and focusing on a target market. I tell you that it works a lot better like this!

Thanks for sharing! I hope you have a great week!
