5 Things You Need To Know Before You Start Working From Home

Working from home can be very tricky. Many people out there are dreaming of working from home, so that they can be their own boss. There are some obstacles on the way and you have to be aware of them before you start working from home.

The Right Business Model For Working From Home

Before you start you have to make the decision what business model you want to follow. Do you want to sell your own products? Or do you want to sell other people’s product, called affiliate marketing.

Than you have also to think about, would you like to join a network marketing company, like Pure Leverage and so on, or do you want to go into direct sales. In some direct sales company you can sell so called high ticket products where you can a high commission. The Six Figure Mentors is such a company.

The more clarity you have what you want the better research you can make to start your own business to working from home.

Set Yourself A Time Frame For Working From Home

Often, when people start to work from home, they are starting to work part time at their business. That’s maybe something you also have in mind.

Make a clear plan when you are working on your business and stick with it. To start an grow a business takes a certain amount of time. I recommend that you set aside at least 10 hours a week. Otherwise it gets hard to get off the ground.

Create A Workspace For Working From Home

To work efficiently you need a good place in your home. Especially when you have a family. You need a place where you don’t get interrupted all the time. And make it also clear to all family members, that when you work at your business that they do not disturb you. It’s hard to move forward when your kids come all the time to you and interrupt you while you are working.

Working From Home Costs You Money

As every business, you have to make some investments for your business. Get clear about how much money you have to spend for your business. There are several things you have to think about:

  • Investment in furniture
  • Investment in computer and other hardware
  • Investment in software
  • Start up cost to join some affiliate- and network marketing companies
  • Investment in education (online and offline)
  • Cost for an accountant if you are not good at figures
  • Marketing cost

You see, there are many things that can cost you money. Be prepared that you spend more money than you thought about at the beginning.

Working From Home Can Be Lonely

Working from Home can be lonelyWhen you sit alone at home in front of your computer, it can get hard. It’s not like in the traditional office, where you meet all the time other people. Where you can have chat here and there or ask someone a question when you have a problem to solve.

When working from home you are alone and you have to deal with. Also when your partner is all the time around you that can lead to problems. Think about how you can join other people with whom you can interact. For example, you can join a mastermind group. That can be online or offline. Also find an online community in your niche where people share their experience. In my niche, the earn money online niche, we have a great online community within the Six Figure Mentors.

I hope these tips help you on the journey to working from home. When you want to learn more about the Six Figure Mentors and how they help me to create my laptop lifestyle business, than click here.

    Hi Bruno,

    Wonderful post indeed 🙂

Yes, I could relate to all of them as one works from home being bloggers, but I don’t most of us have any regrets for having chosen this way of working. At least I don’t! I know it’s never easy, either working online or even at a full time job, but there are certain choices we’ve to make, based on our priorities in life.

For me, it was being with my kids and family as they were growing, and it’s a choice I made to give up my full time job and turn to part time, working from home. I agree, it can get lonely at times, but it all depends on your mindset, and I don’t actually have that problem as I look forward to that lone time so that I can sit and work! It’s the best time when my kids are away 🙂

However, just as you mentioned, you need to create a time frame or deadline and be sure to work just as you would if you were in a full time job, that kind of work-balance discipline you need to create. Never been a problem for me as I’ve learnt that fine art of time-management. But I can understand how people can have issues with it.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice weekend 🙂

Hi Bruno. Good tips here to consider before you set up in business working from home. I was thrown into it following redundancy and illness which prevented me from going back to work for a while. I love working from home, but I certainly didn't think about the costs associated with it. With hindsight I would have spent time beforehand getting things set up, and saving some money towards setup costs. Great points! Andrea (popped by from Simple Blogging Network)

Bruno: Another ‘eyes-wide-open’ post. One thought that sprang to mind was that so many who ‘hate their boss’ wind up being their own boss and still ‘hating their boss’. It takes passion, commitment, discipline and self-belief to overcome the nay-sayers. The great thing is, that when these are there IT IS WORTH IT! – SO WORTH IT!!!!. You are traveling a great road, my friend. Seek out travel companions whose company you enjoy who will provide sustenance to you and receive sustenance from you. Thank You, Thank YOU, THANK YOU

    Hi Bruno

    Indeed a great article.

I agree with all these points. Working from home isn’t that much easy which people think.

One has to face so many problems when he or she is working from home. I personally feel so much laziness and It becomes very much hard for me to work.

Homes are always made for doing rest and It always have that kind of environment which pull us to rest there rather than focusing on work.

This is the biggest problem I always face. I need to try my hard to focus on work rather than just taking rest. I am glad that you have lighten this topic.

Thanks for sharing it with us. 😀
