7 Facebook Marketing Mistakes You Should Avoid

When you are in FB, you see, so many Facebook Marketing Mistakes people do. There are so many who have no clue how to behave on Facebook and any other social media site.

To do marketing on social media sites like Facebook is always a balancing act between being social and promoting your business. What you must be aware is that people are not in Facebook to buy things. They are in Facebook because they want to know what they friends are doing and sometimes to learn something from people who have certain skills.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #1

People are posting on Facebook without a plan and concept. People who liked your business page or follow you on your personal profile are not always at the same time online like you. Therefore, you have to make sure you plan your messages throughout the day.

When you have a business page, you can easily schedule your posts. When you prepare a post, you can click on the clock symbol and then the calendar opens where you can set the date and time to publish.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes - set the time for your post

Set the date and the time of your post

Also when you go on your FB page to insights, then posts, you see when your fans are mostly online. So it’s a good thing to schedule a part of your post at the time the most people are online.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #2

Selling to your audience all the time. People don’t like to be sold on Facebook. The only time, according to Quicksprout.com, it is working when you offer a discount.

Other ways you can do it to create a landing page where you give people something for free and then in your follow up emails you can make some offers.

Besides that, you can also drive traffic to your blog post and sell your product or service with a good call to action at the end of your blog. In this way, you have first given some value, and when people like it, they buy.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #3

Buying follower on Facebook. It can be okay to get a bit a start. But the negative side with these followers is that they don’t interact on your page. And these followers lowers your edge rank and FB won’t show your posts anymore to people.

Only with an interactive audience you will have success with your FB page. Otherwise, you will have a ghost page.

You can promote your page on Facebook within your target audience. In this way, you get in front of the people who are interested in what you sell and are more interacting with you when you share things on your timeline. Read here also my Facebook marketing advice.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #4

When you share your blog post without doing some optimisation on your blog. You need a picture with the right size on your blog, and you have to optimize the social meta tags. Without it, your message on Facebook looks not so nice. And you will loose interaction and clicks to your blog. You can optimize it with the SEO plugin from Yoast (it’s free).

What you have to know is the right pixel size of your picture. To get a big nice picture on your FB timeline, the size of your picture should be 600 x 315 pixel. Then your post will look like the one below.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes - Optimal post for FB

How Your Post Should Look Like

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #5

You may see this often that people always promote themselves. You see all the time messages on FB like „join my team” „This will be big, join now” and any other kind of self-promoting.

You get better results when you share things of value and also share posts from other people. Things like quotes, blog posts, videos and nice pictures. Write all the time a comment when you share something from other people. What also worked for me is sharing pictures when I go hiking or traveling. It’s always a good thing when you share personal things on your FB page. People love to see things from your personal life on the business page. Because they see, you are a real person.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #6

Spamming your links all over in Facebook without giving value to people. There are many people who like your page or send a friend request on your personal profile with the only intention to share their affiliate link. And this is a real bad behavior. Never share a link to your opportunity on someone else profile. You loose instantly credibility and its likely that people unfriend you or ban you.

Another thing is with tagging all kind of people when you share something on FB. When you want to tag someone in a post with your links in it, ask first for permission. When someone is tagging me without permission, I unfriend him or make sure that he can’t tag me anymore. You have to win the trust from people who follow you and with bad marketing (link spamming) they loose trust in you. The same you can apply to all other social media sites.

Facebook Marketing Mistakes #7

Adding too many social media buttons on your site. In the past, I also had  a lot of sharing option and I reduced it, and I will reduce it even more in the future. The more options people have, the less action they take. You can increase the click-through rate when you reduce the options. I lately saw a blog post where you could share the pictures to FB, Twitter and Pinterest when your mouse hovered over the picture. Such tools are cool things and people like to share pictures. And when you do that, you always have  a link back to your site.

Conclusion

When you avoid these mistakes, you will see that you will have more engagement on your Facebook page. And at the same time your sales will more likely go up.

What you have to keep in mind, Facebook changes all the time their algorithm and you have to keep up with all the changes. The better you adapt with it, the more profit you will have from your activities.

What are your experiences with Facebook?

All very important tips, Bruno. Thank you for sharing. Your comment regarding purchasing Facebook likes resonated with me. Working on political campaigns, it’s common practice to do this to show support. However, interestingly, many of the local campaigns that do this have lost their elections! Same situation here – their support base or people interested in their cause was not organic. It was all for show. Best to have genuine interest!

    Hi Bruno,
Indeed, there are lots of Facebook marketing mistakes we should avoid. The major mistakes center around doing things that tend to promote our business instead of offering value to the followers.

Unless, these mistakes are avoided, it would be difficult to gain traction with Facebook marketing!

Meanwhile, another mistake to be avoided with Facebook marketing is not responding to comments nor engaging followers. This should be avoided because it shows the blogger is not concerned about his/her audience.

I have left this comment in kingged.com where this post was shared.

    Hey Bruno,

The mistakes that you mentioned here are the same mistakes I made when I first started using facebook. Yes, I spammed for a bit, added anyone and everyone to my fan page, and shared post without a pic. This really didn’t get me anywhere.

So last year I took note of all that I did, and put myself on other people’s shoes. This was after reading “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook” by Gary Vaynerchuk… I started working harder by working smarter, and used less of old marketing methods of exposing the mass and focusing on a target market. I tell you that it works a lot better like this!

Thanks for sharing! I hope you have a great week!
